TEAM WORKING AND COMMUNICATION SKILLS

Communication is key in O’Connor Pyne. I frequently had to communicate with my manager on what work needed to be done and when it had to be done by. To solve any queries or problems I had with my work I had to communicate and listen carefully to my manager. I frequently composed letters to bank and clients when asked of me. Since working on a team I now fully appreciate the importance of teamwork and the need to co-operate and work efficiently and effectively with one another.

NUMERICAL AND ANALYTICAL SKILLS

“These skills are important as my main task was to complete financial accounts. Since the start of my placement with O`Connor Pyne & Co I have become more confident in doing up end of year financial accounts. I became skilled at being analytical especially when analysing the different accounts. I had to allocate different cheques to invoices and lodgements with all sales. Further to this I sometimes had to match up unknown cheques with invoices that had been paid around the same time. In addition I analysed the different invoices and credit notes in to the correct nominal. Throughout my time in O`Connor Pyne & Co I also gained invaluable information on how to use the accounting packages, Sage and Big Red Book. I also increased my knowledge of Excel for undertaking the task of completing accounts.”

Placement Link to Academic Studies

Introduction to Accounting

This module gave me the basis of my financial knowledge and my ability to complete financial accounts such as bank reconciliations. This module gave me the knowledge of basic accounting principles which I expanded at O’Connor Pyne and can now put into real life context.

Company Law

I undertook company secretarial work and composed letters such as Letters of Engagement, Letters of Representation and Annual General Meetings paperwork. This module gave me the knowledge of the legal regulations that accountants have to meet. I regularly used the CRO website to search company information regarding shares and ownership which I had been shown how to use in lectures.

Writing and Communication

Having studied the format and how best to compose a letter during my time studying the writing and communication module in second year, it has assisted me in the task of writing letters to banks and Company Secretarial letters.
